Sheetrock Recall Info
Do you have defective wallboard or plaster?
Tons of contaminated sheetrock were used during the housing boom. Made with Chinese Plaster, this drywall material lets out a sulfur compound when exposed to damp or humid conditions. Now, sometimes a few years later, problems are beginning to crop up in homes with wallboard, plaster, or sheetrock that contains sulfur compounds that tainted building materials in China. Your general contractor may not have known that a subcontractor used cheaper Chinese drywall as a substitute for the usual brands. During the housing boom after Hurricane Katrina, drywall and plaster were in shorter supply so builders used more China Drywall to build homes, and now this wallboard is starting to emit fumes that taint copper, tarnish silver, create a rotten egg smell, and make houses unlivable. A drywall remediation project can also turn your life upside down, because every piece of plaster in your home has to be replaced, and this is similar to rebuilding your home from the inside.
In some cases, people have already gone into foreclosure due to bad drywall from China which has caused them to move out and stop paying for their primary residence. In other cases, people may not know they have a problem until it becomes humid enough to affect the drywall, which can sometimes take years. Drywall testing may be the only way to ensure that your sheetrock is (1) from China and (2) part of the recall.
Notes and Special Information
Special note: Always get testing to ensure that your sheetrock is actually made with Chinese plaster, and you are not experiencing problems from other sources.
